An active adult community, which is especially, designed for the elderly people, who are no longer working, or are restricted over a certain age, specially the senior and retired citizens, are called the retirement communities. Many retirement communities are planned for the purpose to facilitate the needs and wants of the elderly retirees, which include golf courses, refreshment course, clubhouses, on site medical facilities etc. In generic term, it covers the variety of housing for retirees and the seniors. There are a total of three broad retirement communities; they are the active community, which means the whole residential unit; the supportive/active communities, which is a combination of both the residential and the health-care facilities; and the supportive communities, which only covers the health care unit and assist in nursing and living care of the elderly people. Usually retirement communities are built in warm climate where the elders would feel cozy and spend the later half of their lives serenely. Till now many certified retirement communities have been set up with the sole purpose of economic and social development of the country.

It is not compulsory that a retirement community should be a fully residential one, there are many club communities for the elders where they go for the whole day and spend the time with there friends and warm up with all the facilities that are being provided by the club. Today retirement no longer means that you stop working and shift to an old age home, but after many years, changes have come in the shape of new priorities, interest and decisions. The entire new generation that has begun to retire has started adding an important touch to all the new designs of the home in such a way that it suits the aging population. A thoughtful modification has taken over, and the youngsters are choosing to care for their parents at home or else they pay frequent visit to their elders at the retirement communities.
